According to government sources, the CVC refused to quit even after government has asked him to. Government had also offered him to rehabilitation if he quit, but Thomas refused the offer saying, “Resigning at this stage will leave him tainted.” The ‘helpless’ government is now hoping that the Supreme Court will itself quash his appointment after examining legalities involved with the case. The source also revealed that it is unlikely for the government to initiate President’s action as Thomas has done nothing wrong as the CVC. Apart from the SC’s tough stand on the issue when the government was asked to explain the procedure followed in PJ Thomas’ appointment, what added to the level of discomfort are the claims by Sushma Swaraj that the government is speaking lies on the issue and that she will file an affidavit in court to put the record straight on her dissenting note in his selection over a corruption case.
Government sources said the law officer was responding to queries whether the CVC selection panel knew about the chargesheet against Thomas. To this Vahanvati said, no papers to this effect were circulated. This was not the same as saying he or the government did not know about the case pending against Thomas.

Jaipur Literature Festival 2011 over

The Jaipur Literature Festival, which wrapped up Tuesday, is Asia's largest, an eclectic mix of big-name authors, Bollywood luminaries and lots of debate. This year's attendees included Nobel laureate Orhan Pamuk and Candace Bushnell, author of 'Sex and the City. Five days of fan frenzy, intellectually stimulating sessions, free flowing wine, paparazzi, electric evenings, marathon book signing sessions, cerebral discussions, all came to an end with the closing of the Jaipur Literature Festival. With over 200 authors and innumerable budding writers, the festival at Diggy Palace that ended Tuesday was like a big fat Punjabi wedding where everyone - right from the hotels to the auto-rickshaws - made a killing.
The city of forts and palaces with a rich Rajputana history and an overwhelming hospitality certainly lived up to the celebrated literary romantic notions. Add to that a golden Mughal touch in the form of royal hall settings and you had an enviable combination. While murmurs of how the festival was better and less commercial last year were rife amongst the literati, the presence of the likes of J.M. Coetzee and Orhan Pamuk and girlfriend Kiran Desai - the festival's own Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie - certainly made headlines. The festival has, over the last few years, given Jaipur a generous piece of the rich literary pie. It is an event the whole city knows about and takes pride in hosting.

RBI hikes repo, reverse rates by 0.25%

Reserve Bank of India Tuesday raised its key short-term lending and borrowing rates by 0.25 per cent each with immediate effect. The short-term lending (repo) rate has been hiked to 6.50 per cent and the borrowing (reverse repo) to 5.50 per cent, a move that will make funds expensive for banks and may lead to a hike in interest rates. The Reserve Bank, however, projected GDP growth at 8.5 per cent with an upside bias. It also warned that inflation is a matter of concern and revised its projection for FY'11 to 7 per cent from 5.5 per cent earlier.
These initiatives, the RBI said will "rein in rising inflationary expectations, which may be aggravated by the structural and transitory nature of food price increases." The apex bank further said its monetary action was aimed at reining in rising inflationary expectations, while at the same time being moderate enough not to disrupt growth. It also aims to contain the spill-over from rising food and fuel prices to generalised inflation and continue to provide comfort to banks' liquidity management operations, the RBI said.

C.P Joshi loosing shine, shifted to Transport Ministry

The cabinet reshuffle Wednesday saw some Congress leaders gaining ministries perceived as important while a few others got portfolios that are less in the limelight. Rajasthan's C.P. Joshi is among the cabinet ministers shifted to ministries that appear to be less meaty than their earlier assignments, to head Road & Surface Transport Ministry. Joshi was in charge of the Rural Development Ministry, which oversees implementation of some ambitious social sector schemes of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government including the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). The UPA has laid much emphasis on rural transformation and the charge of the ministry has now been given to Vilasrao Deshmukh, former chief minister of Maharashtra, where a scheme similar to MGNREGA was already being implemented.
Union minister C P Joshi the failure to handle the UPA goverment's flagship programme of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) resulted in his transition from rural development to surface transport. Joshi had not acted on a letter from Congress president Sonia Gandhi to raise MGNREGA wages and also stood in contempt of an Andhra Pradesh High Court order. Joshi was earlier seen as a trusted man and was given the task of implementing the flagship programme. But MGNREGA under Joshi not only kicked up a huge storm across the country with misappropriation of funds but the programme, which many termed as the stepping stone of the UPA's victory, was fast proving to be reason for discontent among masses.

After being bowled out for 190, India restricted SouthAfrica to 189, thanks largely to Munaf''s four wickets thatalso included the important scalps of dangerman Hashim Amlaand Graeme Smith. Munaf, who picked up four for 29 runs, combined withspearhead Zaheer Khan who accounted for two dismissals, toscript a historic win at the New Wanderers Stadium wherefortunes ebbed and flowed throughout the South Africaninnings.
It could have been anybody''s game till Munaf had WayneParnell caught at point by Yuvraj Singh to signal the end of adramatic match in the 43rd over. Rajasthan win Ranji Trophy 2010 title

Rajasthan Cricket Team scripted history by clinching first ever Ranji trophy on Saturday. Rajasthan Ranji team thrashed Baroda by 1st innings lead in the final match (Match Drawn). Pacer Deepak Chahar is the new finding for Rajasthan and Indian cricket as well. Chahar, who was playing maiden Ranji Trophy, claimed eight wicket in his first first class match.
Left-arm spinner Ashok Maneria, who had signed up with Rajasthan Royals for IPL IV earlier this week, celebrated the achievement with a cracking century as Rajasthan made 341 runs in their second innings and then reduced Baroda to 28 for four wickets as the umpire signaled the end of play on the decisive day. Earlier on day four, resuming at 361 for eight, overnight batsmen Sankalp Vohra (34 not out) and Murtuja Vahora (36) carried on Rajasthan`s fightback and tried hard to surpass Baroda`s first innings total of 394 with a 68-run ninth wicket stand but to no avail. Another Rajasthan Royals new recruit, Deepak Chahar (4/79) broke the dangerous-looking partnership, dismissing Vahora caught by Akash Chopra with Baroda still needing 38 runs to get past the visitors.

Ranji Trophy: Menaria, Parida take Rajasthan near Historic win

Rashmi Ranjan Parida (batting 78, 246 mts, 191 balls, 10x4s, 1x6) and Ashok Menaria (batting 83, 167 mts, 134 balls, 9x4s, 3x6s) have very nearly secured Rajasthan's maiden Ranji Trophy title. A fifth wicket at that stage would have exposed the lower-order of the visitors, who by then were ahead only by 99 runs, and handed the hosts a definite stranglehold in the Ranji Trophy final. Unfortunately for Williams and Baroda, the ball agonisingly bounced off his wrist and trickled away.
Riding Menaria and Parida's unbroken 140-run partnership for the fourth wicket, Rajasthan, who were reduced to 11 for three and 61 for four, ended the day at 201 for four for an overall lead of 234 runs. With 90 overs remaining in the game, the eight-time runners-up are well placed to win the coveted trophy. A period of half-an-hour in the second session could well prove to be the decisive passage of the match. With the top four batsmen --- Aakash Chopra, Vineet Saxena, skipper Hrishikesh Kanitkar and Robin Bist --- back in the hut, Baroda, backed by a small but vociferous crowd, were going all out at Menaria and Parida.
Score Summary:

P.J. Thomas,Central Vigilance Commissioner and formerly official of that State, is cited as one of the accused, took a new turn on Tuesday, with the Supreme Court paving the way for the commencement of the trial pending in a lower court. With the death of the former Chief Minister, K. Karunakaran, the main accused, the Supreme Court disposed of his appeal as having come to an end. Lodha was informed of Karunakaran's death. In a brief order, it said: “The sole appellant died on December 23, 2010. Consequently, the appeal abates, and is dismissed as such.”
